I always had "Down in... H&Needles" on CD, which was fuzzy and sounded like old vinyl in places, so there is a real difference here. And the material has such mad joie d'vivre, it can't be missed. By accident "Down in..." and Tom Waits' "Rain Dogs" got put together in my laptop, alternating tracks in numerical order... it's a brilliant mix of sea chanteys, character pieces, monologues, and kling-klangerie. thenewspaper

Ka-Spel has been doing dream logic pieces for so long now that this relatively song-based collection comes as a surprise. For the most part, it has the same skeletal, spacious, and jazzy metronome balladry that dominated Pieces of 8 and Long Red Ladder, only much more minimal. "Entrance & Illumination" is pretty; the violin chorus of "Mr. Negative" is remarkably effective; and "Surfing the Volcano" is gorgeous and immersive. RTW
